Fire/Rescue
The Meadowood County Area
Fire Department and Fire Training Center was established
in 1953 by Chief Donald Holbrook. Chief Holbrook realized
an increased need for specialized equipment and additional
manpower as well as the increased need for specialized training
to the area’s volunteers.
The Department, commanded by Chief Robert Crowell, is a
private fire department, located on Bowkerville Road in
Fitzwilliam, NH. Meadowood has approximately 70 members,
including one Chief, two Assistant Chiefs, one Operations
Captain, one Maintenance Captain, four Lieutenants and approximately
61 firefighters, all of whom are volunteers.

Meadowood
does not have a first-due response district, but rather
offers mutual aid fire suppression, ALS emergency medical
services first response, vehicle extrication, search and
rescue, swift water rescue, underwater rescue/recovery,
and answers other special requests. Meadowood responds to
any reported structure fires in the immediate area, including
automatic mutual aid to Troy, Fitzwilliam, Marlborough,
Dublin, Winchester, Swanzey, Rindge, and Richmond, NH as
well as Templeton, MA on a First Alarm assignment. Meadowood
has one of the only gas meters and thermal imaging cameras
in the area and is often Special Called for this equipment.
Meadowood has one of the only tower ladders in the area,
which serves as the first-due truck company to many of the
towns listed above. Meadowood is also requested for their
specialized heavy rescue, which carries rehab supplies and
an 18 bottle cascade system capable of filling several hundred
SCBA’s at an extended incident. The heavy rescue is
also either automatic or Special Called to respond to many
motor vehicle accidents in the area for their extrication
tools.
The Meadowood County Area Fire Department is dispatched
by Southwestern New Hampshire District Fire Mutual Aid located
in Keene, NH. They are dispatched on high band 154.430 MHz
with a PL of 136.5 and use 154.385 MHz as an operational
frequency (Tac 1). Meadowood is recognized within the mutual
aid system as “11”, which precedes the type
of apparatus and the apparatus number (i.e.: 11 Rescue 1).

Every spring and fall, the Meadowood Fire Training Center
hosts a major fire school, offering NH State certified classes
to firefighters from all around the area. Such classes as
SCBA/PPE, Basic Vehicle Rescue, Basic Pumps, Portable Extinguishers,
EMT RTP, RIT, Liquid Propane Emergencies, Rescue from Heights,
and other fire related courses are offered. Meadowood Fire
Training Center also offers full firefighter certification
courses such as NH Firefighter Level 1 and Level 2 throughout
the year. Meadowood owns and maintains a large training
ground located just down the road from the station. This
facility is available for use by any interested department.
Future plans for the Meadowood County Area Fire Department
and Fire Training Center include improving the fire school,
offering more classes and props, and obtaining additional
specialized equipment. We are proud to cary on this tradition
that Chief Holbrook established. Meadowood is a completely
volunteer organization that takes pride in the service to
the community that we provide.
