Courses Offered
These courses happen over the 3 day weekend, Friday-Sunday, of Sepember 22, 23 and 24, 2006. taught by instructors who volunteer their time. The courses offered are outlined below.

'Tag, You're It"

Time- 0800-1700
Day- Sunday only
Instructors- Nancy Carney-Hall
Prerquesites- none
This course is designed for those arriving first on scene. We all know it could be regardless if you are an officer or a firefighter. Now what do you do? The day will be spent reviewing the importance of residential pre-planning, as well as, spending time discussing the numerous types of scene size-ups. We will dicuss apparatus placement, the importance of ICS/IMS, RIT crews and the use of thermal imagers in the scene size-up. We will use numerous examples from nearby towns in fire simulations as you and your crew successfully manage the scene.

'Implementing the RIT- How to get the most bang for your manpower'

Time- 0800-1700
Day- Saturday only

Progressive RIT can reduce fireground injuries and fatalities long before the MAYDAY is ever called. This 8 hour didactic program is designed to provide valuable information for enhancing your Rapid Intervention Team. Program includes: Case studies, statistics, National Standards Review, operational procedures for enhanced utilization of your RIT manpower, risk analysis survey, communications, survey, tools and equipment needed to function as a progressive RIT. Too often firefighters dread the assignment; nobody wants to stand in the street and watch. Maximize the use of you RIT and thus creat positive attitudes for a safer, well-managed fireground.

'National Incident Management System'
(NIMS IS-700)

Time- 0800-1200 & 1300-1700
Day- Saturday (2 classes)
Instructors- Nancy Carney-Hall
Pre-requesites- none
This is a grant-funded course.No charge for NH residents. $20.00 charge for out-of-state students. NIMS integrates effective practices in emergency response into a comprehensive national framework for incident management. The NIMS will enable responders at all levels to work together more effectively and efficiantly to manage domestic incidents no matter what the cause, size, or complexity, including catastrohpic events of disaster or terrorism.

'Firefighter Safety, Survival and Rapid Intervention Teams'

Time-
Day- Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Instructors-
Pre-requesites- Firefighter II
Cost- $110 per student

The firefighter will be provided with the knowledge and skills necessary to operate as a member of a Rapid Intervention Team. To perform rescues of other firefighters, who have become trapped or lost, and to utilize appropriate self rescue procedures when confronted with life threatening situations. Additionally, the firefighter will be able to recognize factors and conditions that will relate to firefighter safety and survival at emergency incidents.

'FF1A-4A Firefighter Personal Protective Equipment-Protective Clothing'

Time- 1800-2200
Day- Friday
Instructors- Ken Whicker, Steve Robbiee, Dave Pugh and Paul Dexter
Pre-requesites- none

This course, part of the FF1A cirriculum, will teach the student the values of protective clothing and the correct method of how to don and doff protective clothing. The student will meet eight objectives as outlined in Essential of FireFighting 4th Edition. Each student is to bring his/her book to class.

'FF1A-4B Firefighter Personal Protective Equipment- SCBA'

Time- 0800-1700
Day- Saturday & Sunday
Instructors- Ken Whicker, Steve Robbiee, Dave Pugh, and Paul Dexter.
Pre-requesites- PPE

This course, part of the FF1A cirriculum, teaches the hazards faced in the fire service and builds confidence in donning and doffing SCBA to the FF1A standards using Essentials of FireFighting 4th Edition. Students must be clean shaven. Mustaches permissable. Jewelry is not acceptable.** A NH Fire Academy General Admission Application MUST be returned to MCAFD.

'Basic Pump Operations'

Time- 0800-1700
Day- Saturday & Sunday
Instructors-Wayne Perkins and Brian Bardon
Pre-requesites- none

This course will teach the operation of fire service pumps (front mount & midship), in both single stage and two stage operation. Priming devices, methods of power transfer, pressure control devices, and accessories will be discussed. Hands-on operations will allow the student to perform basic pumping evolutions. This is a great course for the begining firefighter or the firefighter who would just like a review in pumping.*

'Auto-Extrication'

Time- 0800-1700
Day- Saturday & Sunday
Instructors- William Shea
Pre-requesites- PPE

The student will be able to identify and safely use various rescue and extrication tools, and work as a member of a team to extricate a victim trapped in a motor vehicle. This certified class meets the FF2- Vehicle Rescue standards.**

'Ladder Co. Operations'

Time- 0800-1700
Day- Saturday & Sunday
Instructors- Ian Tenney and Lt. Rodney Barco
Pre-requesites- PPE/SCBA

Fire Service Educators Instructors Ian Tenney and Lt. Rodney Barco, both members of Ladder Co. 4 of the City of Hartford, Conn. Fire Department, will be presenting a very hands-on 16 hour Ladder Company Opertions course. This two day combination lecture and hands-on course will assist participants in strengthening their knowledge and skill base in ladder company operations. Your fire department does not need a ladder truck to do ladder company operations. Topics to cover will include: Staffing options, specific tool and duty assignments for ladder company members, response, positioning, and fireground duties. Practical evolutions will include forcible entry, horizontal and vertical ventilation, primary search, ground ladders, overhaul and working with a thermal imager. Spare cylender will be needed along with an SCBA.

'MAYDAY- Management for Incident Command-Strategic Consideration'

Time- 0800-1700
Day- Sunday
Instructors- Lt. William Greenwood
Pre-requesites- none

Let's face it. The incident commander is busy at any building fire. Add in any firefighter calling in a MAYDAY and your scene canturn into chaos instantly. Pre-planning how to manage a MAYDAY is necessity for greater success. This one day, didactic course is designed for progressive firefighters, line and chief officers who may manage an incident scene. The class will include: Case studies, statistics, risk vs. gain analysis, and review the leading causes of MAYDAY. Students will be provided with operational templates for managing a MAYDAY while not loosing control of your initial operation. Focus will be on front-loading your command team for progressive MAYDAY management.

'Wildland Firefighter 1/
NFPA-1051'

Time- 0800-1700
Day- Saturday (2) & Sunday
Instructors- Joe Sarcione & Dave Jones
Pre-requesites- none

***Second Saturday will be Sept. 30th***

The first 6 hours will introduce the student to the effects and causes of wildland fire behavior. The student will have an understanding of how fires spread and the environmental factors that influence spread. The remaining 18 hours will introduce the student to safety concerns while reroute to and from the incident as well as on the fire line. The student will be taught and complete practical evolutions on where and how to build a fire line, establish escape routes, hose lays, safety zones and deployment zones. The student will also be taught how to dry mop and wet mop. Maps, compass, fire shelters and hose lays will be introduced.*


'EMT-Basic Re-Certification'

Time- 1800-2200 (F),
0800-1700(S/S)
Day- Friday, Saturday & Sunday
Instructors- Herbert "Buzz" Shaw
Pre-requesites- EMT-Basic

Students who successfully complete this 24 basic re-certification course will be eligible to take the NH state practical exam. This course will include airway management, trauma, OB, infants and children, patient assessment and the allowed electives in the course. Location- Richmond, NH Fire Station
